What is the Node-S sampling frequency? Can it be adjusted?
Understanding how your Node-S samples, uploads, and sleeps helps you make sense of how often your data arrives — and why. This article walks through the cycle, how battery-saving mode affects it, and what can be adjusted.
The three stages of operation
The Node-S repeats a cycle of three stages:
- Sampling — the Node-S collects measurements from its onboard sensors (particulate matter, gases, and so on). By default, sampling lasts
90 seconds. - Uploading — once sampling is done, the Node-S sends the data to the cloud. This typically takes
60 to 120 seconds, depending on network connection quality. - Sleeping — after uploading, the Node-S enters a low-power state to conserve energy before the next cycle. By default, sleeping lasts
900 seconds.
Together, this cycle defines your data reporting period — how often your device reports data. By default, that's about 17 minutes.
Automated battery-saving mode
The Node-S battery is designed to last up to 30 days without sunlight. During prolonged low sunlight — like in winter — automated battery-saving mode kicks in to extend battery life.
- Sleeping period adjustment — as the battery level drops, the device sleeps longer between measurements to save power. When the battery recharges (with more sunlight), it returns to its normal sleep period.
- Battery voltage triggers — different battery voltage levels determine how much the device slows down or speeds back up.
In short, battery-saving mode keeps your device running efficiently in low-power conditions by adjusting how often it collects data, even without sunshine.
What can be adjusted
Clarity can remotely tune your sampling period, sleeping period, and battery-saving voltage triggers based on your application and how much sunlight your site gets. If you're interested, email support@clarity.io — see also how to change the sampling frequency.
