Troubleshooting a Weak Signal Alarm

A Weak Signal alarm is raised when more than 75% of a device's readings have a weak signal over a three-hour period. The good news: a weak signal doesn't always mean a problem. This article helps you decide whether action is needed, and what to do if it is.

1. Check whether data is still coming in

A device can keep sending data normally even on a weak signal, so start here.

Check the Activity section under Devices → Nodes → Status Details. If you see the expected number of readings, no action is needed.

Example activity plot showing expected readings

For example, based on its sleep time, the device above is expected to send between 3 and 4 readings per hour.

2. Power cycle the Node-S

If there are fewer readings than expected, power cycle the device:

  1. Unplug the solar panel or power adapter from the Node-S power connector.
  2. Wait 30 seconds, then plug it back in, screwing the connector's ring firmly in place.
  3. Listen for the Node-S Power On sound and Connection Successful sound.

3. Act on what you hear

  • If you hear a Low Battery sound instead, charge the device for at least 24 hours.
  • If you hear the Power On sound but not the Connection Successful sound:
    • Check that the antenna is securely attached.
    • If possible, move the device to an area with stronger cell reception. It often helps to test whether the Node connects successfully in your office or somewhere you know has good reception.
